Rocktopia: Magnum - 'The Gathering' - CD Review

The word legend is sometimes used shall we say a little to often and usually wrongly, to describe something or someone who just doesn't live up to that word. Yet I can with confidence use it to describe the British rock institution called Magnum, a band who for more than thirty years have entertained, enthralled, mesmerized and astounded audiences from around the world, with their unique brand of British pomp rock. To help reinforce the legend tag I've used, the band are going to be releasing in the very near future, a five disc compilation of over thirty years worth of remixed, demo, alternate and hard to get live versions of their songs and let me say that if you're a Magnum fan then your in for a real treat. http://ping.fm/p6PI3

Rocktopia: Ayreon - 'Timeline' - CD Review

You can never point the finger at Arjen Anthony Lucassen for stinting on quality because yet again this is a fabulous release that encompasses 3 audio CDs, a DVD, a poster and a monster booklet (56 pages worth), all housed in a very nice box. If you are already a fan and own every album from which all but one of the tracks included here have been taken, you are still going to want to own this splendid package. If, by some strange quirk of fate you have thus far managed not to be exposed to the delights of this music, then there is no better place to jump on the bandwagon, you won't be disappointed. http://ping.fm/8j0fL

Rocktopia - Arthemis - 'Black Society' - CD Review

Italian based Arthemis return with their fifth album 'Black Society', the follow up to 2005's 'Back From The Heat'. Featuring the twin guitar attack of Andrea Martongelli and Alessio Garavello, both members of Power Quest, Arthemis are known as a thrash band, but there's so much more to their sound than that, with loads of melody, touches of prog and good old-fashioned Heavy Metal. http://ping.fm/zrZr4

Rocktopia: Andromeda - 'The Immunity Zone' - CD Review

Polish progressive metal band Andromeda are one of those acts whose music is something I like to describe as not an easy listen. Intricate songs interlaced with odd time changes and clever lyrics, makes their work something you have to indulge in, music that you have take the time to really listen to before you get into it, before making your mind up about what they have done. New album 'The Immunity Zone' is just such an album, one that I didn't really understand on the first few plays through as I wasn't giving it my full attention at all times and missed out on quite a lot of what was going on. http://ping.fm/bqjQi

Rocktopia: Coronatus - 'Porta Obscura' - CD Review

You have to wonder if Nightwish had any idea of how big a can of worms they opened by becoming a successful crossover of rock and opera. They have given rise to many copycat artistes, some staggeringly good, some embarrassingly awful, and some blander than a British Prime Minister. Germany's Coronatus are happy to throw their hats into the ring with their second album, and if nothing else have brought their own identity to the goth themed party (please leave your cloaks at the door). http://ping.fm/z6Jgp

Rocktopia: Cryonic Temple - 'Immortal' - CD Review

Three years after their third album, 'In Thy Power', Swedish power metalheads Cryonic Temple are giving it another go with 'Immortal', although I don’t think it has much chance of living forever. Good power metal grabs you by the nads and shakes until you puke, whereas Cryonic Temple seem to have made their album by ticking checkboxes in a 'How To Do Power Metal' book. http://ping.fm/zIC3C

Rocktopia - Shadowkeep - 'The Hourglass Effect' - CD Review

Shadowkeep have had a troubled last few years due to line up changes, but the UK band that so impressed with their debut albums back at the turn of the century have returned with a new disc stuffed with power prog metal that is bound to impress. 'The Hourglass Effect' sees the debut recording of vocalist Richie Wicks (Ex Tygers Of Pan Tang), a man with a decent set of pipes, not a million miles away from the Geoff Tate/Tony Mills style of singing. He's also brought to the table a nifty science fiction concept to the album, his lyrics going well with Guitarists Nikki Robson and Chris Allen's solid song writing. http://ping.fm/EHKCR

Rocktopia: DC4 - 'Explode' - CD Review

This is an interesting little disc, containing not one, not two, but three of the Duncan family, led by Armoured Saint's Jeff Duncan on guitar and vocals. That alone should give you reason to expect catchy heavy metal with much posing, and you'd be right on the money. DC4 is completed by Shawn and Matt Duncan on drums and bass respectively, whilst ex Dio axeman Rowan Roberts trades licks with their brother. The album starts off blisteringly well, with a title track that is just a big ball of heavy rock perfection, mindful of Blaze Bayley on top form. http://ping.fm/CiohJ

Rocktopia: Crystal Eyes - 'Unchained' - CD Review

Sweden's Crystal Eyes have been around for a few years now, with Chained their first album for the prestigious Metal Heaven label. As with many of their label mates, Crystal Eyes are a competent enough power metal band with enough of an edge to keep casual listeners interested. It's easy to throw comparisons around for this sort of EuroMetal, so I will. Crystal Eyes aren't a million miles away from the likes of Gamma Ray or Hammerfall, with songs laden with melody and power in equal amounts. http://ping.fm/qCulU

Rocktopia: Pain - 'Cynic Paradise' - CD Review

Sometimes I feel a bit out of the loop when it comes to European rock, with so many bands out there that to try and keep up would mean I'd have to live with a pair of headphones stuck to my head 24/7. Peter Tagtgren, the mastermind behind Pain, is a man I only became aware of when I saw him support Nightwish, and to be honest I wasn't that impressed with his industrial techno metal. With this in mind I wasn't expecting much from this, his sixth studio album. http://ping.fm/sugj7

Rocktopia: Implosion - 'Lucidity In Quietus' - CD Review

There's not much info out there on Implosion, a progressive metal band from Greece who have spent two years making this, their oddly titled debut. They certainly live up to the twin ideas of 'progressive' and 'metal', though, unleashing long songs full of introspective, poetic lyrics held together by chugging guitars and meandering instrumentals. All this culminates in the final track 'Redemption', a seventeen minute epic that makes absolutely no sense at all in the time honoured prog tradition. http://ping.fm/JBqbD

Rocktopia - Status Quo - 'Pictures - 40 Years Of Hits' - CD Review

Every year seems like another anniversary for Status Quo which means its time for yet another compilation. The good thing about 'Pictures' is that it is biased towards Quo's earlier career and for my money mid-seventies Quo is certainly something to admire while much of their post seventies material is debatable. If you can stomach the likes of 'In The Army Now', 'The Anniversary Waltz (Part 1)' and 'The Party Ain't Over Yet' then disc two won't be much of an issue for you but others will find it very patchy. http://ping.fm/1WTcD

Rocktopia: Michael Schenker Group - 'The Best Of: 1980 - 1984' - CD Review

These days Michael Schenker seems to be in the rock press for his drunken onstage attempts to play the guitar which doesn't help his career one bit. But let's not forget the fact that he has an incredible back catalogue and at his most creative he is easily one of the finest guitarists in the business. The compilation collects the best material from the Michael Schenker Group back catalogue between the years 1980 and 1984. The ex-Scorpions and UFO guitarist formed MSG after returning briefly to the Scorpions during the 'Lovedrive' era. http://ping.fm/GgaWD

Rocktopia: Exciter - 'Trash Speed Burn' - CD Review

Seasoned thrash metal band Exciter are back with a new album appropriately titled 'Thrash Speed Burn'. They've never been the most popular band on the circuit but they've got a loyal albeit small fanbase that has seen them through harsh times. Led through various line-ups by guitarist John Ricci, these Canadians are usually reliable when it comes to new material. 'Thrash Speed Burn' is their tenth opus and was initially scheduled for release in December 2007 until it was pushed back to January ’08 and again it was pushed back to March ‘08. http://ping.fm/BMRhs

Rocktopia: Destruction - 'D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.' - CD Review

It's been 25 years since Destruction was formed in Lorrach in Germany. Alongside Kreator and Sodom, Destruction are titans of the German thrash metal circuit. After years spent in the wilderness during the nineties, founding bassist/singer Marcel Schirmer returned to the band in 1999 and since then things have been on the up for Destruction: they signed to Nuclear Blast in 2000 before moving on to AFM in 2005 for the 'Inventor Of Evil' album. http://ping.fm/8NoGb

Rocktopia: Jimmy Copley & Friends - 'Slap My Hand' - CD Review

A professional drummer since the age of 17, Jimmy Copley has been playing drums in Magnum since 2005. He's also known for his work with Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes as well as Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Paul Rodgers and M3 with ex-Whitesnake players Micky Moody and Neil Murray. This is a varied set of songs but purely for lovers of rock and roll, American blues and basically any music fan with broad tastes and an open mind. So just who exactly are Copley's friends? Well, there's quite a few: Jeff Beck, Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody, Neil Murray, Pino Palladino and Mark Stanway, amongst other lesser familiar names. http://ping.fm/J1fT2

Rocktopia: Sammy Hagar - 'Cosmic Universal Fashion' - CD Review

Until recently my days as a Sammy Hagar fan were well and truly behind me. I didn't rate his work with Van Halen that highly, hadn't bought any of his solo albums since his self-titled 1987 release and didn't think his appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival a few years ago was in the same league as his legendary early 80's UK tours. On a recent trip to Canada I picked up all his last few albums for the princely sum of $2 each, and whilst the stuff with the Waborita's was very patchy indeed, it was worth the money I spent just for his latter-day classic 'Marching To Mars'. http://ping.fm/16WTJ

Rocktopia: Eclipse - 'Are You Ready To Rock' - CD Review

Young Swedish duo Eclipse have made some excellent music on their previous two albums but failed to make the impact that was predicted at the launch of their debut several years ago. 'Are You Ready To Rock' (shouldn't that have a question mark?), their first release for the Italian Frontiers label, seems to stand more of a chance because not only is it on a bigger label but Erik Martensson and Magnus Henrikssen have made an album of such quality that it would be an absolute travesty if it didn't increase their profile greatly. http://ping.fm/SdAc0

Rocktopia: Saxon - 'Into The Labyrinth' - CD Review

As far as survivors of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal go, Saxon may have lagged behind Iron Maiden and Def Leppard in terms of sales and exposure, but certainly in this decade at least, they've been by far the most consistent. 'Into The Labyrinth' continues that trend and comes across as a mixture of ‘Lionheart’ and ‘The Inner Sanctum’, with a few other styles thrown into the pot for good measure. http://ping.fm/6ko3j

Rocktopia: Guns N' Roses - 'Chinese Democracy' - CD Review

After so many years and a gazillion dollars does anybody really care about 'Chinese Democracy'? Has the wait be worth it? Is it actually any good? There are so many questions to be answered… Well, early sales figures suggest that there's still a broad fan base out there that do give a damn. The wait hasn’t been worth it. And it is actually pretty good…in parts. Truthfully, that's about as good as it was ever going to be considering the sheer amount of hype the album has conjured. http://ping.fm/wrUXk

Rocktopia: AC/CD - 'Black Ice' - CD Review

AC/DC work to a very simple philosophy; 'If it's not broke, don't mess with it.' Very simple, very straightforward. Their music is also straightforward, heads down, no nonsense, mindless boogie, to quote an old band of the 70's/80's. (Write in if you know who it was). However, this album has been eagerly anticipated and the tour is already sold out, even the extra dates. http://ping.fm/8vpYX

Rocktopia: Native Window - 'Native Window' - CD Review

Native Window are a new name that may not be familiar to you, but I'm guessing the name Kansas probably is? Neither of the iconic US band’s most prolific songwriters – vocalist/keyboard player Steve Walsh or guitarist/keyboard player Kerry Livgren – were interested in working on a new Kansas album, in fact Walsh recently announced his retirement from writing new songs entirely, so with the other members of the band getting itchy feet for new music the only option was for the foursome to do it themselves, so Native Window was born. http://ping.fm/xYrec

Rocktopia: Mind Key - 'Pulse For A Graveheart' - CD Review

Italian metal band Mind Key have been in existence since 1999 and were formed by guitarist Emanuelle Colella and keyboard player Dario De Cicco, but it wasn’t until 2004 that they finally released their first album. With a line-up that also included drummer Andrea Stipa, bassist Raffaele Castaldo and singer Mark Basile, 'Journey Of A Rough Diamond' was also put out by Frontiers records, but singer Basile left before the album was released and they drafted in Aurelio Fierro Jr. to play dates supporting Dream Theater, Vision Divine and Pendragon, along with an appearance at ProgPower Europe. http://ping.fm/hlGH2

Rocktopia: Stryper - 'Murder By Pride' - CD Review

I know they've had a lot of stick for the yellow and black costumes, the bible throwing and the Christian message in their songs, and there are even people out there who still believe the whole thing is just a gimmick, but personally I don't pay that much attention to most lyrics anyway, and if I like the music then I like the band. Stryper are one band who've never, ever disappointed me and whose albums I like all of, and the odd song aside pretty much all the way through. http://ping.fm/izpAs

Rocktopia: Wild Side - 'Speed Devil'

Hailing from Norway, young hard rock band Wildside were put together in 2005 by drummer Ronni Arntzen and former Pagan's Mind guitarist Thorstein Aaby after Aaby had seemingly recovered from cancer. As members came and went Aaby became ill again and sadly passed away in 2007 and an almost completely new line-up recorded the ‘Indication’ album that was released late in 2008. 'Speed Devil' is their second album and builds considerably on the debut with a host of catchy riffs, thumping drums and bass and a stellar production by the band themselves; although I assume that Andy LaRoque's mix has a lot to do with that too. http://ping.fm/ddOzW

Rocktopia: Vince Neil - 'Tattoos & Tequila' - CD Review

When people bring up the subject of 80s US vocalists with limited ability the two most commonly mentioned are Ratt's Stephen Pearcy and Vince Neil, and while I like Pearcy I can also understand why some don't, but I've always thought that Vince Neil gets a raw deal, and this album proves it. Of the twelve tracks on offer only two are new songs, but please don't let that put you off as Vince does a great job on a varied cross section of cover songs. With a band that features Slaughter members Jeff Blando on guitar and Dana Strum on bass, as well as newcomer Zoltan Chaney, and guests including Anthony Focx from Beautiful Creatures and Night Ranger’s Jack Blades and Brad Gillis, Vince and co. tear through crunching versions of Cheap Trick's 'He's A Whore' and The Sweet's 'AC/DC' like they were written especially for him. http://ping.fm/r7bJM

Rocktopia: Spiritual Beggars - 'Return To Zero' - CD Review

Have you ever liked someone's side project a lot more than their main band? Of course you have, and the problem with that is that because it doesn't pay the bills their output is usually sporadic at best. Swedish guitarist Michael Amott's releases with Spiritual Beggars were originally quite frequent when he first left Carcass to form the band in 1993, but the recent success of Arch Enemy has put them on the backburner and 'Return To Zero' follows on five years after their last album, 'Demons'. http://ping.fm/bgnh1

Rocktopia: Marseille - 'Unfinished Business' - CD Reviews

Liverpool based Marseille were one of many bands of the late 70s/early 80s hard rock boom who were badly stung by record labels, splitting soon after their third album was released in 1984 to seemingly never be heard from again. Four fifths of the band would drift back into obscurity whilst a career switch by guitarist Neil Buchanan would see his star rise as a TV presenter on children's shows like No. 73 and his own Art Attack. Having grown tired of the TV world he sold the Art Attack franchise for a tidy sum and set about putting the band back together with the full original line-up. http://ping.fm/JTEXi

Rocktopia: Robin Beck - 'The Great Escape'. World exclusive album preview!

Having floored me once back in 1989 with her awesome debut, the seminal 'Trouble Or Nothin', it seems like Robin Beck is about to do it all over again with her forth-coming release 'The Great Escape'. Check out the exclusive snippets of all songs here on Rocktopia and judge for youself! http://ping.fm/1yBmw

Rocktopia: Joe Elliott's Down 'n' Outz - 'My Regeneration' - CD Review

When I first heard about Joe Elliott's project with members of the Quireboys I wasn't sure it would work, especially given that all the songs were to be by Joe's favourite musicians of all time – Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter and their various later bands – Mott and British Lions. I also thought I wouldn't know any of the material – I was so wrong on both counts! This is a collection of some of the best straight ahead rock songs you will ever hear and without realising it, will probably know several of already. http://ping.fm/4otux

Rocktopia: Devo - 'Something For Everybody' - CD Review

After twenty years Devo have finally released a new album and all I can say is, it was worth the wait. Interestingly, the band posted soundbytes of sixteen songs on their website and asked fans to vote for their favourites, of which they took the top twelve and put them on the album, hence the title I guess. They're all three minute pop songs, but then you wouldn't expect anything other from these masters of synth pop-rock. 'Please Baby Please', 'Don't Shoot' and 'What We Do' are amongst the most infectious songs I've ever heard and as good as any of the material from the 'Whip It' era. http://ping.fm/NbIZz

Rocktopia: Dweezil Zappa - 'Return Of The Son Of ...' - CD Review

Love him or hate him, Frank Zappa was nothing if not prolific. Now, in the midst of another Zappa Plays Zappa hectic tour schedule, Dweezil Zappa has released the live album 'Return Of The Son Of ...' – Zappa fans will know that the missing word is Shagoogagoogagunga, but I just wanted to put it in for those who didn't. On a two disc release, Dweezil has managed to choose just fourteen tracks to grace us with. http://ping.fm/0zW1l

Rocktopia - Official new Skin video on Youtube

The official video for 'Born To Rock 'n' Roll', from UK rock act Skin, is on Youtube now. The video features footage of the band performing the song from their appearance at this year's Download festival. The song itself is available as a free download from the bands website. http://ping.fm/1yRfq

Rocktopia - Black Country Communion cracks the UK album charts

Black Country Communion’s self titled debut album has charted at 13 in the Official UK Top 40 Album Chart - www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/albums The album has also hit #1 in Official UK Top 40 Rock Album Chart (www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/rockalbums) and #2 in the Official UK Top 40 Indie Album Chart (www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/indiealbums). http://ping.fm/KRbTa

Rocktopia - Delain confirm UK tour

Dutch symphonic rock outfit DELAIN have announced a UK tour for next Spring. The band’s current album, ‘April Rain’ is out now, with debut release ‘Lucidity’ also recently hitting UK shelves for the first time. After sold-out shows at the end of 2009 and crowd-pleasing slots at the Hard Rock Hell and Sonisphere Festivals, DELAIN have built quite an audience via word-of-mouth. http://ping.fm/sn0z4

Rocktopia: Jorn - 'Dio' - CD Review

I found it rather creepy that Jorn, a favourite vocalist of mine, could announce he had a Dio tribute album ready for release so soon after the legendary Rainbow and Black Sabbath vocalist had passed away. It was later clarified that Jorn had been working on this for a while and it was just a sad twist of fate that Ronnie wasn't around to hear the finished results. Jorn has never shied away from how big an influence the likes of David Coverdale and Ronnie were on his own style ... http://ping.fm/SF5OR

Rocktopia: John Norum - 'Play Yard Blues' - CD Review

Europe guitarist John Norum famously left that band on the brink of mega-success because he wasn't happy with the direction the band were taking circa their breakthrough album, 'The Final Countdown'. Since then he's kept his integrity intact by refusing to compromise his music and basically just doing whatever the hell he wanted, which seemed to be fine with fans and critics when doing melodic hard rock like his debut 'Total Control', the Glenn Hughes fronted 'Face The Truth' and his spell in Don Dokken's band for the under-rated 'Up From The Ashes'. http://ping.fm/enoTF

Rocktopia: Grand Illusion - 'Brand New World' - CD Review

For those of you who didn't know, or indeed had forgotten given the length of time between albums, Grand Illusion are a Swedish trio who released two very good Westcoast albums in the nineties under the name of Promotion, before toughening up their sound a little and releasing three albums under the name of Grand Illusion. The last and hardest rocking of these, 'Ordinary Just Won't Do', was released way back in 2004, and despite some great reviews the band only lasted a few months after its release, calling it a day early in 2005. http://ping.fm/piU02

Rocktopia: Pretty Maids - 'Pandemonium' - User CD Review

Denmark's Pretty Maids have been knocking about since the early 80's and even gained some success in the 80's with the albums Future World & Jump The Gun - both widely regarded as classic melodic metal albums. The group have had a few line up changes over the years but main men guitarist Ken Hammer & singer Ronnie Atkins have remained ever present. The current line up now includes Kenn Jackson (Bass), Allan Tschicaja (Drums) and the latest permanent edition is keyboardist Morten Sandager. http://ping.fm/c6xU2

Rocktopia: Black Label Society - 'Order Of The Black' - User CD Review

Has the cleaner living Zakk Wilde mellowed on studio album number eight? Although the album boasts three so called ballads and Zakk showing his affection for the piano more and more with each subsequent release, the answer is a resounding no. Order of the Black is both brutal, and beautiful at the same time and to these ears is the most complete and mature work the band have submitted to date. http://ping.fm/2h4Ym

Rocktopia: Auras - 'New Generation' - User CD Review

Yet another AOR band from Brazil, Auras joins the burgeoning scene in Latin America alongside N.O.W & Highest Dream. The band centres on the talents of Gui Oliver (Vocals), Ferpa Lacerda (Guitars) & Edu Sallum (Drums). The guys were bored of playing in tribute bands and decided way back in 2007 to form Auras (or as they were known back then simply Aura) and they wanted to flex their musical muscles and create and play their own material. http://ping.fm/idKrK

Rocktopia: YOSO - 'Elements' - CD Review

The peculiarly named YOSO are really a continuation of the progressive rock band Circa, which featured both ex-Yes/Detective keyboard player Tony Kaye and former Yes/World Trade multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer Billy Sherwood. They've now teamed up with famed Toto singer Bobby Kimball to form what, for all intents, purposes and promo photos is essentially a trio, even though guitarist Johnny Bruhns and drummer Scott Conner are also listed as full band members. http://ping.fm/xgCP3

Rocktopia: Heart - 'Red Velvet Car' - CD Review

It's been well documented that Ann and Nancy Wilson have been mentally scarred by the way they were treated during their mid-eighties 'heyday'. Whilst their phenomenal sales during that period suggest that the record company knew what they were doing by bringing in songs from outside writers, the musical style and visual image were not something the band were comfortable with, so it shouldn't be surprising that when they took control back of their music in the last decade they returned to the early seventies rock and folk influences that spawned the band in the first place. http://ping.fm/DbYkN

Rocktopia: Peter Frampton - 'Thank You Mr. Churchill' - CD Review

It's much to my annoyance that most of the post 'Frampton Comes Alive' career of it's creator has been virtually ignored in the UK, especially as Peter Frampton has a rich back catalogue of quality music. I think the problem has been that he's refused to make an album that follows the same template throughout, opting instead to write in many different styles with his smooth, very English sounding vocals as the only common ingredient. http://ping.fm/Sey8d

Rocktopia: UFO - 'Live On Air' - User CD Review

What was that famous line that Johnny Rotten sneered from the stage at the last proper pistols show? Ever get the feeling you've been had?. Well, that's the taste left in my mouth after buying this lame excuse for an album. Just to put the record straight before I go into one, this 6 track live album that sounds like it was recorded through a food blender has nothing to do with the band in any way shape or form and is no way endorsed by the artist. http://ping.fm/T1U69

Rocktopia: '77 - '21st Century Rock' - User CD Review

2010 for me will be the year I first heard this young band from Barcelona, June, July and August 2010 will be the three Months in which this album has been in almost constant use on the stereo. Forget 'Airbourne' and 'Rhino Bucket' in fact forget any group or artist that claim to sound like the one and only AC/DC if its 'Dirty Deeds' Bon era that you crave then look no further. http://ping.fm/oJp2t

Rocktopia: Two Fires - 'Burning Bright' - CD Review

A band project initially conceived and put together about a decade or so ago, it's fair to say that Two Fires caused quite a stir within the die hard AOR community reuniting as it did vocalist Kevin Chalfant and guitarist Josh Ramos; both of whom had previously been members of the criminally ignored Journey offshoot The Storm in the 90’s. Their eponymous debut (released in the spring of 2000) in many respects picked up from where The Storm left off with 'Eye Of The Storm' some five years earlier, and was rightly lauded as one of the best examples of pure, Journeyesque AOR released in years – and as for their debut appearance at The Gods, it still stands out as one of the most memorable I've ever seen. http://ping.fm/5Er3c

Rocktopia: Tony Harnell & The Mercury Train - 'Round Trip' - CD Review

It's often said that the one true test of any song worth its salt is to judge just how well it works in its most basic format. Deconstruct it, strip away any of the fancy production and studio gimmicks that detract attention from the core melody and serve it up in its purest form ... only then will you know just how great a song it is (or indeed isn't). With the release of 'Round Trip', it seems that the intriguingly titled Tony Harnell & The Mercury Train are doing exactly that. http://ping.fm/8ahuN

Rocktopia: Terra Nova - 'Come Alive' - CD Review

Back in the musical dark ages (more commonly known as the mid 90's) if you happened to be a fan of lush, keyboard laced melodies, gorgeous hooks and towering harmonies it has to be said that on the whole pickings were at best slim … with perhaps two notable exceptions. The first was 93's 'Never Say Surrender' one-off from David Rosenthal and Red Dawn, whilst the second came almost three years later in the shape of 'Livin’ It Up', the debut effort from Dutch quintet Terra Nova. http://ping.fm/2VfjI

Rocktopia: In This Moment - 'A Star-Crossed Wasteland' - CD Review

The debut In This Moment CD 'Beautiful Tragedy' was, in my opinion, justifiably labelled as 'metal-core'. Sophomore release 'The Dream', one or two hard edged Maria Brink screams aside, was something of a melodic goth-metal wet dream. Though 'Beautiful Tragedy' left me a little cold at times, due in the main to the vocals, the follow-up was a beautifully crafted set of songs and something I still return to regularly now. Though totally different in approach and style, if you liked either of the first two ITM releases then you'll need to be sitting down for 'A Star-Crossed Wasteland' when you hit play. http://ping.fm/38BKo

Rocktopia: Saving Abel - 'Miss America' - CD Review

Two years between albums is actually pretty quick by today's standards so I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered Saving Abel were ready to subject the world to a second set of songs, grouped together under the working title of 'Miss America'. 'Addicted' first attracted me to the band during the summer of 2008 and received constant play on many radio stations during my Rocklahoma trip that year. http://ping.fm/2z4yJ

Rocktopia: Allison Iraheta - 'Just Like You' - CD Review

17 year old Alison Iraheta was a finalist, but not the winner, on season 8 of American Idol. 'Just Like You' is her debut album and treads a similar path to the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne and Lesley Roy. For someone so young she has quite a commanding vocal persona and the delivery on most of the songs belies her tender years. It's testament to the quality of the material and also Alison's performance that I haven't been able to remove the CD from the car for the best part of a week. http://ping.fm/CMqgB

Rocktopia: Dan Reed - 'Coming Up For Air' - CD Review

Aside from one or two tracks recorded for other projects Dan Reed has been pretty much in the musical wilderness for the best part of 10 years. 1999,s Adrenaline Sky album left me a little cold and I longed for a return to the Network days of the late 80s and early 90s. It's now almost 20 years since the last DRN album, 'The Heat', times have changed and so have people, meaning anyone expecting to hear songs similar to 'Get To You', 'Ritual' or 'Tiger In A Dress' are going to be sorely disappointed. http://ping.fm/x6mwT

Rocktopia: Dream Evil - 'In The Night' - CD Review

Fifth studio album from Sweden's premier metal band Dream Evil and it's obvious that the old adage of 'If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It' were the first words that were mentioned when it came to the writing sessions. If you liked the band before then you still will do now, if you didn't then there's still nothing here to interest you. Mainman Fredrik Nordstrom (aka Ritchie Rainbow ... see what he did there) alongside lead singer Niklas Isfeldt (aka Nick Knight) still tend to dominate the songwriting credits though it seems that everyone has an input of some sort. http://ping.fm/msB61

Rocktopia: Issa - 'Sign Of Angels' - CD Review

Frontiers Records are absolutely flooding the market with quality releases this Summer, with the excellent Harry Hess fronted First Signal, the collaboration between Michael Kiske and Amanda Somerville, and the return of Stan Bush and Two Fires. And also, currently being touted by Frontiers as the next big thing and a milestone in the Melodic Rock genre is Norwegian starlet Issa. This album has been likened as being as important as the Work Of Art debut, the W.E.T. project, and Treat's awesome 'Coup de Grace' comeback. http://ping.fm/vxlkS

Rocktopia: Black Sunshine - 'Black Sunshine' - CD Review

Forget the bland new offering from Saving Abel; instead immerse yourself in the excellent debut album from Black Sunshine. Formed by one of the worlds top free skiers-before an accident forced a career rethink-and featuring ex Billy Idol drummer Matt Young together with Jeff Flanery, more renowned for his days with Van Zant and The Stereo's Chris Serafini, Black Sunshine is everything that 'Miss America' is not. http://ping.fm/s7Cwg

Rocktopia: It's Alive - 'Human Resources' - CD Review

After making their name signing a string of alternative hard rock bands in the nineties-Creed being the biggest-Wind-up went after the changing mainstream, evolving into a more diverse label that saw alternative rock replaced with dance rock and indie rock. Odd then that in 2010 they should sign a band that has more in common with the distant past. This album could easily have come from the labels nineties roster; fat rock riffs of the post grunge era combining with lower register vocals and the familiar melodies. Possibly the success of the Creed reunion has persuaded Wind-Up to revisit the music that made the label. http://ping.fm/KFYim

Rocktopia: AM Taxi - 'We Don't Stand A Chance' - CD Review

With major labels looking at alternative rock bands that aim to do something a little different, Chicago's AM Taxi look to be in the right place at the right time peddling their particular brand of Brit Punk infused Americana. Certainly it looks like The Gaslight Anthem and AM Taxi are paving the way for a new sound to light up American radio's airwaves. http://ping.fm/EOCe8

Rocktopia: American HiFi - 'Fight The Frequency' - CD Review

Since the classic debut album, it really has been all down hill for American HiFi. They failed to capitalize on its success with subsequent albums- 'The Art Of Losing' and the pop orientated Butch Walker produced Maverick release 'Hearts On Parade' - and secondly as a result they were dropped by the labels twice. Perhaps American HiFi needed Bob Rock more than they thought? And losing the big sound of the debut clearly had an effect on the bands popularity. http://ping.fm/Zy13Z

Rocktopia: Third Eye - 'Recipe For Disaster' - CD Review

Danish based Third Eye started life has a band back in 2003 after four of the members met at music school and started experimenting with a varied bunch of metal covers. Their tutor at the time took interest in the bands progress and offered them the opportunity to try and perform some original material he had written himself. Almost instantly the band felt connected through their new musical creations and Third Eye was well and truly born, although at this stage they were still looking for a lead singer. http://ping.fm/U2FLq

Rocktopia: Winter - 'A Matter Of Time' - CD Review

Winter is a Swedish based act that has steadily been releasing albums since their appearance in 1999. Fronted by the tall dynamic figure of guitar swinging vocalist Anna-Lena Winter, the band create a sound that owes plenty to country music whilst also allowing both rock and pop qualities to seep through from time to time. The eleven songs that form 'A Matter Of Time' are all sung from the heart and are delivered with an effortless and organic style that best suits the bands rustic qualities. http://ping.fm/WFxpR

Rocktopia: Jettblack - 'Get Your Hands Dirty' - CD Review

Among the rock industry's fastest rising trends, 80s revivalism has become something of a bandwagon in recent years. Joining the likes of Airbourne and Steel Panther, sleaze merchants Jettblack are the latest young bucks to jump eagerly aboard. Capturing the sun-drenched glamour of L.A.'s Sunset Strip, 'Get Your Hands Dirty' reveals no trace of its surprising UK origins. Although crammed with Mötley Crüe’s testosterone-driven guitars, these talented musicians demonstrate little interest in make-up and posturing. http://ping.fm/e2j2q

Rocktopia: Crystal Tears - 'Generation X' - CD Review

'Generation X' is the second release from the outstanding Crystal Tears. Initially the band was established in the late 90's and after three demos produced their first official release in 2006 entitled 'Choirs of Immortal'. They then went on to make several appearances with bands such as W.A.S.P and Riot. From the interestingly dark and mysterious cover artwork by Meran Karanitant (Six Feet Under, Hatebreed, Leave's Eyes, Sodom), I was honestly expecting a thrash metal album and was surprised at what unfolded. http://ping.fm/CcYGV

Rocktopia: Indica - 'A Way Away' - CD Review

Well what can I say about Indica apart from the fact I don't think I have heard a band quite like them! Listening to this album is like being drawn into an amazing dark, gothic, fairytale story which would have probably at a guess been scripted by film favourite Tim Burton. Indica is a five piece all girl group from Finland which was founded in 2001 by the beautiful Jonsu (vocals, violin, guitar, keyboards, theremin) and Heini (bass) who met at school and along with fellow members Sirkkuu (keyboards, clarinet, piano), Jenny (guitar) and Laura (drums) have gone from strength to strength with two tours supporting 'Nightwish' followed by receiving one platinum and two gold discs in Finland with several top-ten singles. http://ping.fm/DBDO6

Rocktopia: Empires Of Eden - 'Reborn In Fire' - CD Review

I've got to admit that when I found out that I was due to review this album I got myself quite excited! What with guest vocals from the likes of some of the best known names in metal such as Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper, OnSlaught, Lionsheart, GrimmStine) and Zak Stevens (Savatage, Circle II Circle) just to name but two. Influenced by such classic acts as Helloween, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden this new release is a must for the die-hard, power metal fans everywhere. http://ping.fm/AKu31

Rocktopia: Serial Obsession - 'Shotgun Opera' - CD Review

This is the New York band's first full length disc since their 2008 E.P and its clear the guys have found a solid body of work to offer the public. There's a nice southern flavour to 'All the Way' not to mention some frantic guitar work that wouldn't be out of place on any Molly Hatchet release. Vocalist Shawn Sugre has a voice that is strong in character and easy on the ear and is the ace in the deck with this band. http://ping.fm/YN4Aq

Rocktopia: One Soul Thrust - '1st' - CD Review

It's easy to be taken in by a bands biography when it mention comparisons to Ann Wilson of Heart, right to the point of quoting Glenn Hughes saying Salem, you sing higher than that bird from heart! Let's get one thing straight singer Salem Jones does not sound like Ann Wilson, a closer comparison would Sass Jordan or Alanis Morissette. Opening track 'Freewill' has strong links to something Skunk Anansie might have recorded but sounds so disjointed that the song loses all its direction from the word go! http://ping.fm/klfhW

Rocktopia: Hellyeah - 'Stampede' - CD Review

Bringing together such heavy weight musicians together as Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Chad Gray and Greg Tribbet from Mudvayne is sure to a skull crushing affair. Echoes of Vinnie's former band Pantera are strong in opening number 'Cowboy Way' and it seems things are off to a good start as the band lead an assault of furious guitar riffs. http://ping.fm/14IGs

Rocktopia: Murderdolls - 'Women And Children Last' - CD Review

Following an eight-year silence, America's favourite hellraisers are back with a vengeance, unleashing black comedy and carnage by the bucket-load. Sharper and more aggressive than ever before, these glam-tinged ghouls have evolved dramatically since 'Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls' rocked the metal scene in 2002. While the band's horror-themed trademarks remain faithfully intact, their latest work adds blood-smeared flesh to the barebones of their now-distant debut. http://ping.fm/lA80W

Rocktopia: Iced Earth - 'Box Of The Wicked' - CD Review

US power/thrashers Iced Earth are certainly no strangers to the world of box sets. They seem to get less interesting every time, actually, starting with the 'Dark Genesis' collection and those rare first releases, to the 'Slave To The Dark' reissues and now finally 'Box Of The Wicked', comprised of all the material they unleashed under the double concept record that was very much the baby of guitarist Jon Schaffer, an accomplishment he longed to initiate. http://ping.fm/oSB1L

Rocktopia: Black Majesty - 'In Your Honour' - CD Review

One of the more exciting new bands on the power metal circuit (at least in the beginning), Australian metallers Black Majesty impressed me a lot with their 'Sands of Time' debut a number of years ago. Something about their more guitar-based approach, somewhat progressive, with a cool Jag Panzer meets HammerFall vibe was what seemed to set them apart from their fellow countrymen, bands such as Dungeon and Pegazus who had more in common with the traditional schools, rather than with what was going on in Europe at the time. http://ping.fm/cge0c

Rocktopia: Spinning Chain - 'My Insanity' - CD Review

Suffering a major identity crisis, genre-hoppers Spinning Chain resort to copycat tactics in a bid to attract a target audience. Though neatly produced, the bulk of 'My Insanity' amounts to little more than a Linkin Park tribute, showcasing creepily detailed knowledge of the band's finest trademarks. But, with nu-metal's heyday indisputably over, these once-popular trappings come off undesirably dated. http://ping.fm/PIZDh

Rocktopia: Drowning Pool - 'Drowning Pool' - CD Review

A decade of trials and tribulations has evidently made its mark on these former nu-metal monsters, who are presently peddling an altogether more accessible sound. Having been nip-tucked into stadium rock perfection, Drowning Pool's early venom arguably died with former vocalist Dave Williams. Now armed with the gravel-throated talents of Soil frontman Ryan McCombs, the quartet are enjoying chart success most recently witnessed in explosive single 'Feel Like I Do'. http://ping.fm/ntIXd

Rocktopia: Skull Daze - 'Skull Daze' - CD Review

Rain immediately followed by air raid sirens adorns the opening track ('Intro'), with pandemonium on the streets that's book-ended by a woman's scream. Guitars inevitably chug, announcing the arrival of 'Back to Hell'. Rock 'n' roll oriented, dual guitars from axemen Acey Starlight and Danny Slade wail here, there and everywhere, as is the case upon other tracks including 'Heartbreak City', 'Dirty Girl' and 'Nowhere to Run'. Staunch choruses, vital in the glam metal sphere, are ever present, particularly on numbers like 'Back to Hell' and 'Nothin'. http://ping.fm/9SiAK

Rocktopia: Triosphere - 'The Road Less Travelled' - CD Review

Triosphere are a female fronted melodic power metal band from Norway who have just released their second full album and it's an album that made me sit up and take notice as soon as it started to play which, with the amount of stuff I get to hear these days is quite a feat. Yet what was it that made me sit up and take notice? Was it because the music that the band played was highly original and had never been done before - err no, was it because there was something different about the way they went about making their music, again - no, so what was it that had ensnared me. http://ping.fm/7oNMr

Rocktopia: Kissin' Dynamite - 'Addicted To Metal' - CD Review

AFM seem to be releasing a slew of very good albums at the moment Triosphere, Masterplan, John Oliva’s Pain, Solution .45 and now this one from German youngsters Kissin' Dynamite. 'Addicted To Metal' is I believe the bands second album (they must have been in short trousers on the first one) and I really like what they are doing, which I suppose is melodic metal with a hard rock edge. http://ping.fm/hVU2i

Rocktopia: Royal Hunt - 'X' - CD Review

The new album by Royal Hunt has been out for quite some time in Japan and thanks to Italian label Scarlet records we here in the west can finally enjoy the bands tenth album. Yet what you're going to hear when you yourself get a copy of 'X', isn't your usual album from the band. Yes all the trademark sounds that make up the bands music are here but the neo classical symphonic metal that they are known for has been watered down slightly for a more Rainbow-esque hard rock sound. http://ping.fm/m0AoV

Rocktopia: Tarot - 'Gravity Of Light' - CD Review

Why do some bands who rightly should be at the fore front of their respective musical genres, fail to make the impact that they so richly deserve? Answers on a postcard please. One such band (for me anyway) who have been plying their trade for close on 25 years is the melodic power/heavy metal powerhouse named Tarot. They have a famous bass player and lead singer in their ranks namely Marco Hietala (of Nightwish fame) though I will not dwell on this because that would not be fair to him or the rest of the band. http://ping.fm/Tb7NO

Rocktopia: Venice - 'Electric: Live & Amplified' - CD Review

It is now twenty years since Venice released their self-titled major label debut album, subsequent to which they have taken control of their own recording destiny with an impressive catalogue of studio, garage and live releases. And yet in many territories the band's expertly and hugely enjoyably executed brand of melodic rock and trademark four-part harmonies remains largely undiscovered. The Netherlands is one country that has taken the band to heart and this latest live album was recorded on the band’s most recent tour of that country. http://ping.fm/58hdC

Rocktopia: Thunderstone - 'Dirt Metal' - CD Review

It's been over three years since the release of 'Evolution 4.0' and the power metal band's fifth album finds them with two new members amongst their personnel: vocalist Rick Altzi (whose third gig this is as he also sings with AtVance and Sandalinas) and keyboardist Jukka Karinen (also with prog metal band Status Minor). http://ping.fm/TwKGt

Rocktopia: The Steve Miller Band - 'Bingo!' - CD Review

Steve Miller has said of this album, 'This is a party record, man. It's about getting up and getting ready to dance. It's like the fraternity party gigs I used to play in college. I went through and picked all my favorite tunes that I really, really loved. I wanted to make this record forever; it started off as just kind of a goof, and then it got real serious.' http://ping.fm/v8JY0

Rocktopia: Raven - 'Walk Through Fire' - CD Review

This is an album that seems to pummel through relentlessly – and is completely evocative of the sort of stuff that this NWOBHM outfit have previously regaled us with since their inception in the mid 1970s. It is the first release since 'One For All' in 2000 following which the band went on enforced hiatus for five years following the calamitous accident to guitarist Mark Gallagher in 2001 when a wall fell on him, crushing his legs. http://ping.fm/5KHxt

Rocktopia: Hazy Hamlet - 'Forging Metal' - CD Review

This is Brazilian heavy metal band Hazy Hamlet's debut album although they have a demo ('Hazy Tales') issued in 2001 and a 3-track EP ('Revelation') from 2003 under their belt. It has therefore taken a long time for the strangely-named band to get this far! You'd never guess the band's origins when noting song titles such as 'Funeral For A Viking' and 'Chariot Of Thor' and from listening to the true metal on offer you will find yourselves well and truly immersed in Manowar / Hammerfall territory, perhaps (and unfortunately) with an element of Spinal Tap thrown in for good (bad?) measure! http://ping.fm/zqGIg

Rocktopia: Arryan Path - 'Terra Incognita' - CD Review

An album of dramatic power metal with technical, progressive and Mediterranean/Middle Eastern flavourings that has the temerity to begin with a nine minute opus - 'Cassiopeia'- that simply fades at the end (why?) is always going to leave this listener bewildered and frustrated and with much to do to win me over. However, one of the great joys of being a reviewer is in receiving a CD that is an unexpected revelation in terms of tremendous music and performances revealed thereon. http://ping.fm/nuwdL

Rocktopia: Wolfspring - 'Wolfspring' - CD Review

Wolfspring is a new band formed by JP Louveton, guitarist and singer with the French Progressive band, NEMO. I’ve not encountered NEMO previously, but if they are as good as Wolfspring then I need to check them out because this is a very tasty morsel indeed. Their sound covers a large number of bases, but is essentially rooted in the Prog genre albeit touching on many of the sub-genres such as Metal, neo-Prog, Symphonic and most everything in between which makes them difficult to pigeon-hole. http://ping.fm/PKz90

Rocktopia: Dante - 'Saturnine' - CD Review

This is German band Dante's sophomore album following on from their 'The Inner Circle' release from 2008. It looks as if I'll have to shell out some cash for the debut, because this is a terrific album. You know on to something a bit special when the opening track, 'All My Life' starts with an atmospheric keyboard throb courtesy of Markus Maichel and a lovely bass riff from Michael Neumeier. http://ping.fm/Jb3x5

Rocktopia: Gallows End - 'Nemesis Divine' - CD Review

Although I will readily admit that my first love and favoured choice is Melodic Rock, every now and again I really need some good ol' Heavy Metal to blow the cobwebs away and get the adrenalin pumping. And this will do just nicely, thank-you very much. Taking the blueprint of traditional metal like Iron Maiden and Dio, and adding the power metal riffs and tempos of Megadeth, Helloween and Gamma Ray, this is 12 tracks and 59 minutes of fist-pumping, head-banging rifferama. http://ping.fm/fmPl6

Rocktopia: Furyon - 'Gravitas' - CD Review

I remember when I first stumbled upon Brighton based melodic rockers Pride supporting Danny Vaughn in a tiny pub in Limerick, and I was hooked immediately, and even now to this day I still think that they were one of the best bands to ever emerge from the UK. They were formed by ex- Balance Of Power keyboardist Ivan Gunn, and appeared in the early part of the decade with debut album 'Far From The Edge'. http://ping.fm/qbXfx

Rocktopia: Accept - 'Blood Of The Nations' - CD Review

Undoubtedly prime movers in the power/speed/thrash metal revolution that swept through Europe in the 80's, the Accept attack stood out from the crowd for a number of reasons – not least because their angst ridden twin guitar sound and guttural vocal style of diminutive demigod Udo Dirkschneider was like nothing else you'd ever heard at the time. http://ping.fm/b9m7v

Rocktopia: First Signal - 'First Signal' - CD Review

Every now and then I get a CD to review that reminds me why I love doing this so much. I get some CD’s that later down the line I will listen to occasionally, and some that to be honest will probably never see the light of day again. And then there are the odd few that take me completely by surprise and become very regular visitors to my CD player. http://ping.fm/guPHi

Rocktopia: Exit State - 'Death Of A Rockstar' - CD Review

First appearing in 2009 with the 'Bad Days' EP, East Lancashire quartet Exit State have gained a decent following thanks to support slots with Blaze Bayley and NWOBHM stars Witchfynde. Comparisons have been made to Foo Fighters, Nickelback and Therapy, with a sound that flits between furious all-out punk and modern metal, and adding a touch of indie rock. To these ears there's a little EMO sound akin to My Chemical Romance at times too. http://ping.fm/0KG94

Rocktopia: 8-Point Rose - 'Primigenia' - CD Review

At one time it was easy to distinguish between the different genres of Rock music, be it AOR, Heavy Metal, Prog, Thrash, Death etc. These days however the lines are becoming increasingly blurred, and I for one think that's a good thing, as it encourages the traditionalists to discover different styles. But I don't think I have ever heard a band that encompasses as many styles as this new band from Sweden to such an extent, and really make it work. http://ping.fm/zrG8Q

Rocktopia: The Pineapple Thief - 'Someone Here is Missing' - CD Review

When handed this latest offering from progressive outfit the Pineapple Thief (could they be anything other than prog with a name like that!), it was with a sense of anticipation, having first encountered their work on 2008’s rather excellent 'Tightly Unwound'. By way of an introduction, the Pineapple Thief – led by singer/songwriter Bruce Soord - have been quietly establishing themselves on the circuit for the last 10 years, with a steady flow of album releases during that time, the most prominent being 'Tightly', which helped launch the Kscope label. http://ping.fm/Nxhdi

Rocktopia: Butch Walker and the Black Widows - 'I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart' - CD Review

For the uninitiated, the name Butch Walker may well draw a blank, which shouldn't really come as a surprise, as, particularly on this side of the pond, his material has largely been conspicuous by its absence. The real tragedy though, is that whilst he remains anonymous, his work is anything but, with A listers such as Avril Lavigne and Pink relying on both his songwriting and production expertise. http://ping.fm/HpRBe

Rocktopia: Jurojin - 'The Living Measure Of Time' - CD Review

Now here's an intriguing proposition – a power quartet, blending the talents of a 'metal' guitarist, jazz bass player, rock vocalist and a classical Indian tabla player. Formed in 2008, Jurojin made their mark on the musical firmament in 2008, building up a live reputation playing their own gigs and supporting the likes of Sevendust. Which brings us to their debut release, produced by Drew Mazurek of Linkin Park/Him fame. http://ping.fm/s2XUz

Rocktopia: Skill In Veins - 'Skill In Veins' - CD Review

Heads down, see you at the end. Which more or less sums up this first release from Italian outfit Skill in Veins, who have raided the metal jukebox to come up with a classic 80s style offering. Impressive stuff from young Italian guitarist Andrea (that's a bloke with a girl's name – bit like a boy named Sue) Lanza, though not surprising considering his staple diet of Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, Skid Row, Megadeth and Metallica, smatterings of which can be heard throughout this release. http://ping.fm/OZ1xz

Rocktopia: Juvaliant - 'Inhuman Nature' - CD Review

Austria's Juvaliant come with a few ready made label attached, voluntarily sticking themselves in the boxes marked 'Symphonic', 'Progressive' and 'Power', happy to lay their colours out for all to see. Mind you, there's a veritable plethora of other bands already filling up those particular boxes, and Juvaliant need to be pretty special to compete. http://ping.fm/UacAe

Rocktopia: Teddy Jonasson - 'The Royal Ghost' - CD Review

Rock Opera is something that can be majestic, breathtaking and exciting, but can just as often be a great steaming turd that sullies your CD player with it’s very existence. Either way, it’s generally rolled out with the best of intentions, something that can certainly be said of this project from Teddy Jonasson. http://ping.fm/RxFeU

Rocktopia: Wicked Sensation - 'Crystallized' - CD Review

There seems to be rather a plethora of quality European hard rock acts around at the moment, and this month sees the return of German/Dutch quintet Wicked Sensation, reformed last year by founder Micheal Klein. He's brought original vocalist Robert Soeterboek back into the fold, along with Punk Cream 69's Dennis Ward, who plays bass and has no doubt had a hand in the production (although it doesn't say either way on my info). http://ping.fm/jof67

Rocktopia: Micki Free - 'American Horse' - CD Review

Micki Free seems to be one of those people who has been knocking about for what seems forever, and may be known to Fireworks and Rocktopia readers as one of the founding members of Crown Of Thorns, writing the debut (and classic) album with Jean Beauvior. Also a part of Shalamar in the 1980s, Free is known nowadays for being a kick ass bluesman and proud Native American. http://ping.fm/KQvcp

Rocktopia - Black Country Communion tops Amazon chart

Black Country Communion's eponymous debut album, released on Monday 20th September, is currently sitting at #1 on the Amazon UK pre-order chart - comprised of Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass), Jason Bonham (drums), Joe Bonamassa (guitar, vocals), and Derek Sherinian (keyboards), BCC have announced a “secret gig” at an undisclosed London location at 8pm on day of album release. http://ping.fm/7SKcN

Rocktopia - New album by UK Rockers Skin out now

Skin's first electric album in over a decade, 'Breaking The Silence' is out now. Featuring eleven new tracks including a reworking of 'Redemption', previously released on 'Up Close And Personal'. http://ping.fm/bnmDv

Rocktopia: Sky Architect - 'Excavation Of The Mind' - CD Review

Sky Architect are a new five piece band from the Netherlands, although having listened to the album before I did some research I had them down as Swedish, who appear to have formed while at Music College. For young guys they certainly have homed in on the classic sounds of the 70's albeit injecting this with some very modern style Prog riffs as by their own proclamation they are striving to revive and reinvent the progressive style and sound of the 70's. http://ping.fm/zLoKR

Rocktopia: Laroxx - 'Laroxx' - CD Review

Italian Glam, Sleaze, Party rockers LAROXX issued this self-titled album on cassette only back in 1992, when it was originally slated for a major label debut in the USA and Japan, only for the deal to turn sour. The band then found themselves without a label and with an expensively recorded album on their hands and they never progressed. http://ping.fm/veqVP

Rocktopia: Jackdaw4 - 'The Eternal Struggle For Justice' - CD Review

It would appear that Jackdaw4 albums are just like waiting for buses. Nothing for years and then three come along at once! This time round we have a brand spanking new set of songs with wonderfully catchy and hook laden eclectic music that is embellished with some of the most poignant, clever and insightful lyrics you are liable to stumble across. http://ping.fm/BKN0Z

Rocktopia: Vonassi - 'The Battle Of Ego' - CD Review

This is the debut from the band formed by Jeff Vaughn (drums, guitars and keyboards), Vince Buonassi (bass, guitars and keyboards) and vocalist, Chase Carter who got together in late 2007. I wasn't know what to expect when I first put this album on the CD player but it's fair to say I wasn't expecting what I heard as Vonassi have created something rather interesting in the way they have amalgamated some seemingly diverse influences and produced an eclectic but very enjoyable collection of songs. http://ping.fm/MWtfD

Rocktopia: Supernal Endgame - 'Touch The Sky - Volume 1' - CD Review

As debut albums go this is pretty good, although it has to be said that a) I have some reservations and b) the guys behind it have been around the music scene for many years. I understand that the three key players involved have been making music together for something like 30 years and this particular collaboration was borne out of a desire to create songs with a spiritual theme, not unlike Neal Morse. http://ping.fm/Fxlmm

Rocktopia: Roswell Six - 'Terra Incognita: A Line In The Sand' - CD Review

If you read Issue 37* you would have encountered my effusive review of the debut album from this 'project', which is based around the writings of Fantasy/Sci-Fi author Kevin. J. Anderson, in which I claimed it to be a Prog classic and a 'must have' release. With the sophomore release one should be prepared for a surprise, because aside from the presence of Michael Sadler (ex-Saga) the cast this time around is completely different and as a consequence the sound and feel represents a considerable change in style. http://ping.fm/7MxOu

Rocktopia: State Cows - 'State Cows' - CD Review

Rounding out an encouraging batch of current releases from Avenue of Allies is the self-titled debut album from State Cows, who consist of the Swedish duo of Daniel Anderson (vocals and guitars) and Stefan Olofsson (keyboards and bass). The pair are both self-confessed Westcoast devotees and having spent time in LA becoming more familiar with the scene and spending time with some of their musical heroes they formed a Steely Dan tribute band which eventually evolved into State Cows. http://ping.fm/HcN8E

Rocktopia: Wheels Of Fire - 'Hollywood Rocks' - CD Review

'Hollywood Rocks' is the feel good debut album from Wheels Of Fire, a hungry young Italian outfit led by Davide 'Dave Rox' Barbieri on vocals and keyboards, with guitarist Stefano Zeni and the rhythm section of Roberto Galli (bass) and Andrea Zingrillo (drums) making up the rest of the quartet. Barbieri has found a collaborator in Michele Luppi (one time vocalist with power-proggers Vision Divine and currently fronting Killing Touch) who had a hand in both the songwriting and production of Hollywood Rocks in addition contributing background vocals and some piano work. http://ping.fm/WUvon

Rocktopia: The Reasoning - 'Adverse Camber' - CD Review

This is The Reasoning's third album and sees them making some changes to their line up. Departed from the scene are Gareth Jones (vocals & keyboards) and Vinden Wylde (drums) to be replaced by Maria Owen (vocals), Tony Turrell (keyboards & backing vocals) and Jake Bradford-Sharp (drums). I had some misgivings when I heard that Gareth was no longer part of the team because I felt that taking his particular voice away from the triumvirate that had been established would be detrimental to their sound. http://ping.fm/45NHy

Rocktopia: Joey Summer - 'Written On The Horizon' - CD Review

'Written On The Horizon' marks the first album to feature all English lyrics from Brazilian vocalist and guitarist Joey Summer and, aside from a number of compositions written with his long time keyboard player and collaborator Daniel Lamas, he is helped out on songwriting duties by Michael Bormann, former Europe guitarist Kee Marcello and the Street Talk duo of Goran Edman and Fredrik Bergh. http://ping.fm/lnSK8

Rocktopia: Bad Habit - 'Timeless' - CD Review

Veteran Swedes Bad Habit will soon be marking a quarter of a century as a band which is as good a reason as any for this look back on their back catalogue with Timeless featuring fourteen old songs and two brand new ones in the form of 'Turning Water Into Wine' and 'Rock This Town'. The two latest efforts will doubtless garner considerable attention as they represent something of a departure from the bands slick AOR sound, having something of an alternative vibe and, in the case of the latter, mildly irritating chain-gang vocals with the title repeated ad infinitum. http://ping.fm/wDbC1

Rocktopia: Angeline - 'Confessions' - CD Review

Some twenty three years since their formation, fans of Sweden’s Angleline can finally celebrate the release of their first full length album. It has been a long and sometimes arduous journey for the musicians that make up the band who formed as teenagers and had to deal with the tragic passing of original vocalist Jorgen ‘Sigge’ Sigvardsson, whose long problems with a heart condition claimed his life back in 1995. Since 1997 the remaining quartet have held a bi-annual get together in his memory and when the band performed at the event in 2007 they realised that there remained an audience for their music which brings the Angeline story right up to date with the writing, recording and release of 'Confessions'. http://ping.fm/fUlOd

Rocktopia: RPWL - 'The Gentle Art Of Music' - CD Review

This collection which celebrates the first decade of music from Germany's RPWL is perfectly titled. Across the two discs and twenty two songs RPWL gently, yet firmly reinforce that while they may not have been the highest profile prog band out there, over the last ten years they have been one of the most seductively and gently effective. http://ping.fm/urwrs

Rocktopia: Titanic - 'Maiden Voyage', 'Screaming In Silence' - CD Review

'Maiden Voyage' marks the first of two albums from Las Vegas, Nevada's Titanic that Retroactive Records has opted to pluck from the vaults in 2010, with 'Maiden Voyage' being just that: the group's debut full length. This collector's edition sports new artwork, while the music has been remixed, remastered, and partially re-recorded. Stryper's Robert Sweet, meanwhile, provides drum parts. http://ping.fm/w070r

Rocktopia: Badlands - 'Voodoo Highway' - CD Review

Hardly a match made in heaven, the journey that took ex Ozzy guitarist Jake E Lee and his incongruent bunch of personalities and egos known as Badlands to their self titled debut in 1989 was a somewhat fractious one. Obviously painful to all those involved, you would have thought that it would've served as an obvious blueprint of how not to make an album, but no, the road to sophomore effort 'Voodoo Highway' was littered with as many potholes, all of which they managed to hit along the way. http://ping.fm/RbyQp

Rocktopia: Rob Zombie - 'Hellbilly Deluxe 2' - CD Review

The first instalment of the 'Hellbilly Deluxe' saga was the breakthrough that allowed one time White Zombie front man Rob Zombie to not only become a blood spattered musical idol for fans of B-movie horror, but to also actually become part of the genre. Since that album Rob has produced, directed and written movies in the horror style. Ironically those interests have actually delayed the release of this album by almost two years, as Zombie has been too busy in films to promote his music. http://ping.fm/3zzdQ

Rocktopia: Glyder - 'Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' - CD Review

Glyder's self titled debut release was a cracking blend of the influences that weigh heavy on Irish rock bands, with Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher often being brought to mind. However even at that stage there were other influences in evidence, with a mixture of many classic rock bands being heard in their sound. Follow up album ‘Playground For Life' was an altogether darker affair both musically and lyrically but most importantly it still rocked like hell. http://ping.fm/t2FPV

Rocktopia: Lucifer Was - 'The Crown Of Creation' - CD Review

You may think that five albums released over a forty year period makes Boston look prolific, however the Lucifer Was story is slightly more convoluted. The band did indeed form in 1970 and for the first six years of their existence Lucifer Was toured regularly and worked up some material for their debut album. That album however never saw the light of day and over the next twenty years the band would get together from time to time to put on some shows and remind an enthusiastic audience of what could have been. http://ping.fm/Qd2VV

Rocktopia: Wyldsky - 'Wyldsky' - CD Review

The eponymous CD from Wyldsky is a rock record that harks back to the 80s, to the kind of bands who were in turn inspired by the 70s rock groups. The band’s central figure is Tyler Nelson whose membership in Great White is slightly overstated in the promotional blurb as he was only in the band from 2003 to 2005, not exactly the greatest era for the band or their fans. http://ping.fm/zGNQF

Rocktopia: Grand Magus - 'Hammer Of The North' - CD Review

A gentle metallic clanking sound seduces you to lean in close to the speakers to hear exactly what is going on, before the clarion call of JB's guitar explodes in your ear and immediately we are off at a gallop, being dragged along by 'I, The Jury'. Barely pausing for breath, this opening track makes a bold statement that announces the arrival of the fifth album - 'Hammer of the North' – from Sweden's Grand Magus, the guitars roar, the vocals soar and the granite tough rhythm has you quaking in your boots. http://ping.fm/Jem1X

Rocktopia: Stairway - 'Interregnum' - CD Review

Being fortunate enough to have cover art work from none other than the renowned artist Rodney Matthews certainly guarantees to grab the attention. Just like their 1993 debut album 'No Rest: No Mercy' which is also graced by one of his works, the cover for Stairway's fifth album 'Interregnum' immediately evokes the spirit of 80’s NWOBHM enthusiasm and the pomp grandiosity of Magnum. http://ping.fm/JJl8S

Rocktopia: Vision - 'The Other Side Of Grey' - CD Review

Vision is the (ahem..) vision of guitarist Sean P. Gahgan and vocalist Nefarious (which I presume isn’t his real name), although they are aided and abetted by Alex Kai on drums and bassist Azrael. Genre wise this is a hard collection of songs to categorise, as the focus can alter from song to song. That in itself however is no bad thing and the in your face brash metal assault that can be found on the album can in places benefit from the variety of influences that are brought in to temper the attack. http://ping.fm/55P4J

Rocktopia: Rush - 'Beyond The Lighted Stage' - DVD Review

It's perhaps indicative of the humility shared by the three members of "the world's biggest cult band" that they were unsure of how interesting a documentary of their forty year career would actually be. However, film makers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn persevered and were eventually given unlimited access to the band and the Anthem Records video vaults to tell a remarkable story that makes up for an almost complete lack of tabloid scandal and band in-fighting with a story based on hard work, musical growth and a kind of deep friendship that's unheard of in the volatile world of rock and roll. http://ping.fm/PDIBq

Rocktopia: Primal Fear - 'All Over The World' - DVD Review

The first thing that struck me watching this DVD was the hazy TV quality of the live footage, no doubt due to budget constraints. That aside there is plenty to enjoy from these metal masters as the band hit the stage and blast into ‘Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’. Ralf Scheepers is a mountain of a man who commands centre stage like Rob Halford on steroids. http://ping.fm/DighJ

Rocktopia: Ten Years After - 'Live At Fiesta City' - DVD Review

Ten Years After? Well…for me it's the best part of forty years after I last saw this hugely entertaining combo play live and to say that I was sceptical about what I would see and hear on this DVD would be an understatement. I shall provide a little historical background before providing an insight into 'Live At Fiesta City'… http://ping.fm/GHRWQ

Rocktopia: Shining Line - 'Shining Line' - CD Review

I would hope that nearly everyone who has previously read an edition of this magazine would be aware of this simply magnificent AOR album by now – and if only for the fact that 'Heat Of The Light', featuring the vocals of Robin Beck, was included on last issue's CD*. Although there is a band by the name of Shining Line, comprising Italian buddies Pierpaolo 'Zorro 11' Monti and Amos Monti on drums and bass respectively, along with fellow countrymen Alessandro Del Vecchio (also the producer of this album), Marco D'Andrea and Mario Percudani, this is very much a 'project' album. http://ping.fm/5bnG7

Rocktopia: Spock's Beard - 'X' - CD Review

he title says it all; this being the Beard's tenth studio album and the fourth since the departure of Neal Morse. I don't mind admitting (again) that the band proved me wrong when they decided to continue without Morse as I felt that he was so synonymous with everything about them that they couldn't possibly overcome his loss. After the promising but rather inconsistent ‘Feel Euphoria’ heralded the new dawn they positively blossomed and won me over without reservation with the subsequent 'Octane' and 'Spock's Beard' albums which saw, in particular, Dave Meros (bass) flourish as a songwriter and Nick D'Virgilio confirm his credentials as their new front man. http://ping.fm/cuaD5

Rocktopia: Kiuas - 'Lustdriven' - CD Review

Kiuas is a name I have been increasingly aware of over the last few years and whilst the reports of their mixture of power, prog, symphonic, death and folk certainly piqued my interest, the band's fourth album 'Lustdriven' is actually the first time I've heard their music. My first impressions were that 'Lustdriven' is a confident blend of the breakneck speed/death metal that the likes of Children of Bodom fire out keyboards and all, and the more bombastic symphonic approach of Nightwish. http://ping.fm/MmbIQ

Rocktopia: Sabaton - 'Coat Of Arms' - CD Review

The panzer battalion that is Sabaton have returned to continue their litany of human suffering and lives lost in warfare and battles, and ‘Coat Of Arms’ is another wonderful power metal album from the band and is brimming with exuberant ideas and strong songs. However, it’s a less ambitious album than their previous release ‘The Art Of War’, that was based upon the writings of Sun Tzu and is more the natural successor to the run of albums prior to this (‘Primo Victoria’ and ‘Attero Dominatus’). http://ping.fm/5Fkha

Rocktopia: Mattis Srum's Pictorial Wand - 'Face Of Our Fathers' - CD Review

Composer Mattis Sørum describes the music of his Pictorial Wand as ‘conceptual with a strong melodic focus and massive arrangements’ and that, I think, pretty much gives the potential purchaser a heads up as to what ‘Face Of Our Fathers’ is all about. We are very much in the territory of progressive melodic rock rather than its metal equivalent – occasionally it is quite gentle acoustic stuff, but this contrasts with incredible symphonic passages that are really demanding of the listener’s attention. Background music this is not! http://ping.fm/wodUj

Rocktopia: Charlotte - 'Medusa Groove' - CD Review

Eonian Records’ quest to unearth great hard rock that failed to see the light of day, for one reason or another, when it was made back in the late 80s continues unabated. Charlotte hail from L.A and deal in heavy blues rock. They’ve got the requisite pouts and the kind of lovely flowing locks that would make Rapunzel jealous, but have they got any real substance or is it just Hollywood flash? http://ping.fm/Cjb3p

Rocktopia: Restruct - 'Built Back Up From Self-Destruction' - CD Review

This new outfit from Vancouver, Washington serve up heavy modern rock. If you put Puddle Of Mudd, Hoobastank and Nickleback through a mincer this is what you’d get. This is partially down to the band’s driving force - Freeman Belmont’s vocals that are uncannily like Puddle Of Mudd’s Wesley Scantlin. It’s all sung through gritted teeth and lyrically it deals in post grunge miserablism with tales of angst, misery, drink and sex. http://ping.fm/Kc5AU

Rocktopia: Molly Hatchet - 'Justice' - CD Review

Much like fellow southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet have been flying the southern flag for more years than I care to mention. With the addition of original guitarist Dave Hlubeck back into the line-up, this clearly benefits the authenticity of the band these days, something that has been questioned on occasion. Though lets be honest, it’s been Bobby Ingram’s band for some time now and this is clear from the writing credits and the more commercial style of music. http://ping.fm/sV8TI

Rocktopia: Annihilator - 'Annihilator' - CD Review

This, by all accounts, is Annihilator’’s 13th release and the sticker on the front of the cd proudly claims 66 solos!! My introduction to the band was the classic ‘Alice In Hell’ and Never Neverland’, in my opinion two of the best thrash albums ever released. Clearly founding member Jeff Waters’ guitar work impressed so many that it led to an offer from Dave Mustaine of Megadeath to join his ranks. Unfortunately, like so many other great Canadian bands, it just never happened for them. That’s not to say Annihilator gave up but just kind of disappeared under the radar. http://ping.fm/Ly70e

Rocktopia: Armored Saint - 'La Raza' - CD Review

I have been a fan of Armored Saint ever since I bought a second hand copy of ‘March Of The Saint’ from Harum Records so many moons ago. The band looked like they were destined for big things but they just missed the bus, and when John Bush jumped ship to Anthrax so many years later we thought it was all over. What sets the band apart is they are friends who love playing together, and for some years they would reunite on occasion to record and tour. The last release I bought was the rather average ‘Revelation’, and to be honest I thought Armoured Saint had finally laid down their swords. http://ping.fm/nv6z1

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - 'Greatest Hits' - CD Review

No doubt due to the covers of ‘I Love Rock n Roll’ and ‘Do You Wanna Touch Me’ I had a false image of Joan Jetts musical output, and as much as I admired her she seemed a little too close to the whole 70’s glam era occupied by the likes of Suzi Quatro and The Sweet for my taste. So I was more than surprised to hear the sonic blast of ‘Cherry Bomb’ and ‘School Days’, two songs that wouldn’t have been out of place on any Ramones record. To be honest it took a few spins of this disc to realise what I had been missing! http://ping.fm/9ni2o

Rocktopia: The Dreaming Tree - 'Progress Has No Patience' - CD Review

It’s not often that I find myself agreeing with the hyperbole that tends to leap off the pages of the promotional blurb that invariably accompanies a new release, however in this case I'll make an exception. The Dreaming Tree strives to stamp their unique style on the listening public. Likened to such diverse artists as Steely Dan, Spock’s Beard, Alan Parson Project and Dream Theater, the result is a truly varied collection that refuses to be tied to any one genre. http://ping.fm/fTz6i

Rocktopia: Legacy - 'Legacy' - CD Review

If you grew up in the United States in the late eighties, were fed on a musical diet of Dokken and Stryper , read the bible a lot and then formed a band, then there's every chance you would end up sounding like Legacy. This quintet from Ohio encapsulates everything commercial metal was at the tail end of the eighties. Eonian, the record label, really does make CSI look like amateurs when it comes to unearthing interesting finds. http://ping.fm/3tSlE

Rocktopia: Tyketto - 'Strength In Numbers' - CD Review

Tyketto have been regular visitors to the UK since reforming in 2004, not bad considering that their last official release was this album back in 1994 (not counting of course the Steve Augeri fronted ‘Shine’ album and the demo collection ‘The Last Sunset.’) After a successful run with the Geffen released debut ‘Don’t Come Easy’ Danny Vaughn, Brooke St. James, Michael Clayton and new bassist Jaimie Scott were shipped off to California with producer Kevin Elson to record what would become sophomore album ‘Strength In Numbers’. http://ping.fm/42Dd8

Rocktopia: Cloven Hoof - 'Throne Of Damnation' - CD Review

NWOBHM stalwarts Cloven Hoof’s latest release ‘Throne Of Damnation’ has had a difficult birth. Replacing frontman Russ North with Matt Moreton (who, incidentally, sang on the 2006 album ‘Eye Of The Sun’ before North returned to the fold) midway though meant that the vocals had to be redone from scratch, and then a hiccup at the pressing plant led to an eleventh-hour switch to a different plant. The CD finally arrived about six months late, but the truth about the Hoof is that it’s a damn good release. http://ping.fm/u0M4y

Rocktopia: Saraya - 'Saraya' - CD Review

My colleagues here at Fireworks magazine always manage to pull off a surprise or two when announcing the Firefest line-up each year, and surely the biggest this year has to be the inclusion of Saraya, who are due to return after an eighteen year hiatus. It was almost inevitable that a re-issue of their classic debut album would soon appear, but to be honest it's long overdue, as the originals fetch a hefty price on Ebay. http://ping.fm/bX5Sn

Rocktopia: Sister Sin - 'True Sound Of The Underground' - CD Review

Back to save metal from going up its own arse, the gloriously gonziod Sister Sin have returned with another slice of pure Eighties heavy metal to remind people what it was like in the glory days when getting drunk was more important than getting chart placings and to make music you needed an instrument and an attitude rather than a PC and Pro-Tools. http://ping.fm/jelLt

Rocktopia: Danny Vaughn - 'Reprise' - CD Review

This is a 2-disc set containing the first 2 Vaughn albums Danny released after leaving Tyketto in 1995, namely 'Soldiers And Sailors On The Riverside' and 'Fearless'. Initially released by Z Records, 'SASOTR' appeared in 2001 and was well received, but when 'Fearless' arrived the following year, poor distribution led to it being difficult to get hold of, and it would soon be deleted. As Danny would later quip, 'You want to get rid of the AIDS virus? Give it to Z Records to distribute!' http://ping.fm/5JDCT

Rocktopia - Barry Goudreau - 'Barry Goudreau'

Dismayed at the lack of action in the Boston camp whilst leader Tom Scholz was fostering a reputation for the agonizingly slow output of his band, guitarist Barry Goudreau put out this solo album with the help of Boston singer Brad Delp and drummer Sib Hashian back in 1980. Perhaps to avoid sounding exactly like Boston he also enlisted another singer with a higher register than Delp – the then unknown Fran Cosmo - and the two pretty much alternated lead vocals throughout. The album was produced by Boston’s ‘executive producer’ John Boylan. http://ping.fm/cRWEG

Rocktopia: Steve Walsh - 'Schemer Dreamer' - CD Review

Back in 1980 there was a bit of a power struggle going on in the Kansas camp between singer/keyboard player Steve Walsh and guitarist/keyboard player Kerry Livgren. Walsh may have been the incredible voice on the hit albums and singles but it was Livgren who’d written all their biggest hits, and after their ‘Monolith’ album it was Livgren who was the first Kansas member to put out a solo album. http://ping.fm/wpTWi

Rocktopia: Diamond Head - 'Live At The BBC' - CD Review

Isn't it marvellous? You wait half your life for Diamond Head's rarer BBC sessions to be officially released on CD, then like buses two come along one after the other. Hot on the heels of last year's superb budget-price anthology 'The MCA Years' comes 'Live At The BBC', a two-disc set featuring everything recorded and broadcast by the BBC by Diamond Head and presented in chronological order. So the first CD kicks off with the lads' four track Friday Rock Show session recorded in October 1980 and first broadcast the following month. http://ping.fm/aT5f2

Rocktopia: Revamp - 'Revamp' - CD Review

In answer to the vexing question 'what comes after forever?' Floor Jansen provides the answer: pretty much more of the same, really. Just about 18 months after the demise of one the Metal Female Voices genres greatest bands, the enigmatic After Forever vocalist is back in business with a new outfit and a new album, neither of which sound a million miles from the last one. http://ping.fm/GNNi9

Rocktopia: Jameson Raid - 'Just As The Dust Has Settled' - CD Review

Nowhere near as famous but no less exciting than many of the bands to emerge from the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal – Brian Tatler namechecks them as 'competition' in his autobiography 'Am I Evil?' – Jameson Raid never fulfilled their potential: two EPs and one sampler track that they distanced themselves from were all that they left behind. http://ping.fm/1ovuM

Rocktopia: Nox Aurea - 'Ascending In Triumph' - CD Review

The roots of Nox Aurea can be traced back to 2005 when Peter Laustsen (bassist of Swedish death metal outfits Rimfrost and Urginnthul) and Grim Vindkall (guitarist of Swedish death metal outfits Domgärd and Urginnthul) decided to take their extra-curricular jamming sessions one step further and started coming up with some intensely doom-laden material. http://ping.fm/vkYwp

Rocktopia: Edenbridge - 'Solitaire' - CD Review

The immediate thing you notice about ‘Solitaire’ – once you get past the almost obligatory intro track – is that it’s heavier than its predecessors. This is fab, because in the past I’ve found Edenbridge a little too fluffy, a little too nice, and have longed for them to push it a bit. The talent is there, undoubtedly, but they’ve always seemed to play it a bit safe. For their tenth release though, the Austrian quartet have really gone for it and in doing so have pulled a rather exciting rabbit out of the hat. http://ping.fm/jtnu4

Export - 'Contraband' / 'Living In The Fear Of The Private Eye' - CD Review

Liverpool band Export are pretty close to my heart, not least because I used to see them regularly at all kinds of small venues in the North-West of England, including many, many times in my hometown of Wigan. Along with many of the NWOBHM bands of the time – a movement that they weren’t really part of – they seemed to be going it alone, recording demos and releasing a self-titled album on their own His Master’s Vice label back in 1980. Rocktopia - STRANGEWAYS to release a new album with Terry Brock on vocals

The news of Strangeways reunion with American singer Terry Brock leaked when the announcement of Firefest 2010 festival line-up was launched with the inclusion of the band in the “Native Sons”/”Walk in the Fire” line-up on the bill. This came as a big surprise to many, since probably very few people would have hoped to see Brock crossing the ocean again and even less could think of a brand new Strangeways recording with the singer together with guitarist Ian J. Stewart, new bassist Warren Jolly, drummer Jim Drummond and keyboard player Dave "Munch" Moore. Still the Strangeways reunion is now reality and the newly recorded studio album “Perfect World” will be released on Frontiers Records on October 15th in Europe and October 26th in the US. http://ping.fm/SF1RO
